Church Website Design in Kenya: What a Church or Ministry Website Needs
Published 2026-09-24 · By Joseph Kiarie, Founder
A church website in Kenya does three jobs at once: helping a first-time visitor find you and feel safe walking in, keeping members informed through the week, and handling the giving and prayer requests that used to happen at the door. Most church sites do none of them well, because they were built once and left. This guide sets out what a church, ministry, mosque or temple website actually needs.
Who uses a church website, and why
Four groups arrive on the same page with different questions. A visitor wants the service times and directions. A member wants this month’s events and last Sunday’s sermon. Someone in difficulty wants to ask for prayer without walking in cold. A partner or donor wants to know what the ministry does with the money.
Designing for all four is what separates a useful site from a digital notice board that only the committee reads.
The pages every Kenyan church website needs
- ✓Service times and directions, with a map, parking and matatu notes.
- ✓A “plan your visit” page describing what to expect on a Sunday.
- ✓Leadership and pastoral team, with roles rather than just names.
- ✓Ministries: children, youth, women, men, worship and outreach.
- ✓Sermons and teaching, as audio, video or both.
- ✓Giving, with the official paybill or till and how funds are used.
- ✓A prayer request form that reaches a named person.
Service times and directions come first
The most common search is a church’s name plus “service times” or “directions”. If the answer is a poster image, a Facebook post from three years ago or “call for details”, the visitor moves on to the church that answered the question. Put the times and the physical location in plain text on the home page, embed a map, and note parking, transport and accessibility.
Sermon media without blowing the budget
Video is heavy and Kenyan data is not free. Host video on YouTube or Facebook and embed it, and host audio on a podcast service — shared hosting cannot carry your video library, and a self-hosted player is the fastest way to make a church site unusable on mobile. Give each sermon a real page with the date, series, speaker and passage: that is the page that ranks when someone searches the message by title.
Giving with M-Pesa, done properly
- ✓Publish the church’s official paybill or till number, never a personal number.
- ✓Explain what each account or purpose is for, so giving is not guesswork.
- ✓Say how the ministry accounts for money, or link to the annual report.
- ✓Never collect card or PIN details on a website form.
Safeguarding, privacy and keeping the site alive
Church websites fail for one reason: nobody owns them. Before launch, name the person who updates news and events, and give them a system simple enough to use in fifteen minutes a week. WhatsApp groups are not a substitute — newcomers cannot see them, which is exactly the audience a website serves.
- ✓Get written consent before publishing photographs of children.
- ✓Do not publish home addresses or personal mobile numbers for leaders.
- ✓Name a safeguarding or child protection contact on the site.
- ✓Member and donor records fall under the Data Protection Act.
What to avoid
- ✓Autoplaying music that blasts a visitor in a quiet room.
- ✓A calendar last updated years ago.
- ✓“Coming soon” pages that have said so since launch.
- ✓Scanned bulletins used in place of readable pages.
