Website Maintenance in Kenya: What It Costs and What It Should Cover

Published 2026-09-16 · Microstation

Most Kenyan businesses budget carefully for the website build and then plan nothing for the years after it goes live. That is like servicing a car once and never again. Maintenance is not a subscription you are talked into — it is the difference between a website that keeps working and one that quietly rots.

What actually goes wrong without maintenance

Websites decay in ways owners rarely see until something breaks in public. Most of it happens quietly, in the background, months before a customer notices.

  • Software and plugins age out and stop receiving security fixes.
  • Backups stop running and nobody discovers it until a restore is needed.
  • Images and scripts accumulate until pages crawl on mobile data.
  • Payment or booking integrations break when a provider changes its API.
  • Forms quietly stop delivering email, so enquiries vanish without a bounce.
  • Contact details, prices and opening hours drift out of date.

What website maintenance in Kenya costs

Prices depend on the size of the site, the platform and the response times you need. As a rough guide for a Kenyan business website:

  • Basic care (updates, backups, security monitoring, minor content changes): from about KSh 3,000–5,000 per month.
  • Standard care for an e-commerce or bookings site: roughly KSh 5,000–15,000 per month.
  • Custom web applications and portals with integrations: usually quoted as a support retainer, based on complexity.
  • Out-of-scope work — new pages, new features, redesigns — is normally quoted separately.

What a care plan should include

A maintenance plan is not a vague promise to "look after" the site. It should be a written list of what happens, how often, and how quickly someone responds when something breaks.

  • Software, plugin and dependency updates on a set schedule.
  • Automated backups, stored off the web server, with a tested restore process.
  • Security monitoring and malware scanning.
  • Uptime and performance monitoring, so problems are noticed before customers report them.
  • A monthly allowance of content changes — new team members, prices, services, photos.
  • Annual domain and hosting renewal handled in advance rather than after it lapses.

The cost of no maintenance

An unmaintained site does not stay still; it loses ground. Search rankings slip as the site slows and security warnings appear. Enquiries drop because a form has been silently broken for weeks. Eventually the cheapest fix is a rebuild — which is why so many Kenyan businesses pay twice for the same website.

There is also a reputational cost that never appears in a quote. A business whose site shows a security warning or takes nine seconds to load is judged on that, not on the quality of its actual work.

Maintenance you can do yourself

Some of it is genuinely in your hands, and it is the part that most affects how visitors see you.

  • Check every contact form yourself once a month and confirm the email arrives.
  • Update prices, staff, services and opening hours the moment they change.
  • Add new photos and case studies rather than letting the site look abandoned.
  • Read any security or downtime alert your host sends and act on it.
  • Rotate passwords and remove accounts for people who have left.

Who should maintain your site

It should be the developer who built it, or a team that can read the code — not a well-meaning relative with admin access. Maintenance means touching a live production site, and a mistake there takes the business offline.

Whoever does the work, insist on two things in writing: that you own the domain, hosting and source code, and that you can take them elsewhere if the relationship ends.
